BA hons Textile Design:

Level 2 students explore eco-fabrics and waste-recycling in Design for Textiles 2b. The sustainability project is the first project that the level 2 students get involved with. The aim is for them to start thinking much more carefully about materials and begin to source their own conventional materials (yarns made from sustainable sources – recycled cottons, organic cottons, new fibres, to consider the impact of both natural materials and synthetics) and look to source more unconventional ones. This is done through a design project and the outcomes can be taken in any direction - knitted, woven, mixed media. By considering environmental issues as integral to the design process in this project, this way of thinking can continue throughout their studies. Practical design work is supported by a reflective critical journal incorporating market research, materials research and trend research. The written work is an important aspect of the project as it encourages students to reflect on the impact of material choices and analyse successful design outcomes.
