DEADLINE 06th October 2008

JOB: Research Assistant

This is an opportunity for a high calibre graduate to provide research support to Doug Miller, the newly appointed Inditex/ITGLWF Professor of Ethical Fashion, based in the Centre for Design Research at Northumbria University.

In 2007 the Spanish Multinational Inditex concluded an international framework agreement with the International Textile, Garment, and Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF), on a set of global employment standards and a management system for achieving global social compliance throughout the company’s apparel and footwear supply chain. This agreement is predicated on the establishment of ‘mature industrial relations systems’ throughout the Inditex supply operations. The post-holder will assist in the first instance in the development of a methodology for assessing the impact of this potential paradigm shift in global social compliance within the fashion industry.

The successful candidate will have a minimum 2.1 Honours Degree in social science, ideally in industrial relations and a working knowledge of corporate social responsibility debates within the global fashion industry. They will be organised, efficient, and expected to work without close supervision. This is a fixed term appointment initially for a period up to 31 July 2009.
