China Blue

This fascinating film follows sixteen-year-old Jasmine a thread-cutter at the Lifeng Factory, one of dozens of denim manufacturers in Shaxi, South China. As she puts it, she makes the big and fat jeans we wear.

'Shot clandestinely, China Blue paints a nuanced, thorough and ultimately moving portrait of the daily lives of the anonymous young workers who make our clothes. As well, this tender documentary illuminates the economic pressures applied by Western companies and their human consequences. ' Toronto Film Festival 05

The film was shown at a Fashioning an Ethical Industry event last Septmeber, in London. Many tutors felt it would be a useful resource for engaging students in the realities of working conditions within the garment industry.

Fashioning an Ethical Industry now has copies of the film available to borrow. If you are interested in using China Blue please contact us on admin_at_labourbehindthelabel.org (replace _at_ with @) at least two weeks before you would like to screen the film.
