FILMS: Ethical Trading Initiative

The Ethical Trading Initiative has produced two films, each about 15 minutes in length, setting out the business case for ethical trade for suppliers and retailers respectively. They have primarily been made to support corporate ethical trade managers raise awareness and support for labour codes within their own company and in their supply chains. However, we believe that they may also be of interest and use to fashion students and tutors.

The retailer film is targeted at buyers, board members, technologists and other non-ethical trade staff within retailing companies. It sets out what ETI believes are the key business benefits for retailers of taking ethical trade seriously, and is based on interviews carried out in early 2008 with three retailer members of ETI (Next, Gap and Tesco), as well as consumers, investors, journalists, trade union leaders, campaigners and suppliers.

The supplier film is targeted at production level suppliers, ie, owners and managers of factories and farms. It sets out what ETI believes are the key business benefits for suppliers of taking labour codes seriously and improving working conditions. It is based on interviews carried out in early 2008 with seven garment and food suppliers in China, Kenya and the UK, as well as three retailer members of ETI. The supplier film is subtitled in Chinese and Spanish as well as English.
